SI Leeds Literary Prize trophy 2012, 2014, 2016

laser engraved native oak, gold guilding

SI Leeds Literary Prize is a new national award for unpublished fiction by Black and Asian woman resident in the UK aims to act a platform to showcase and celebrate exciting new talent from a group largely under-represented on our bookshelves. Funded by Arts Council, SI Leeds Literary Prize has commissioned me to design and create a winner trophy to represent their exciting new prize. As an artist, I understand how difficult to continue creative work, because a creative work doesn’t always bring income. I was so happy to be part of this prize to support those women.

African, Caribbean & Asian textile cultures embrace rich patterns and designs in textiles and I tried to use those design to enrich my trophy design. I also love the warmness of handmade quality in those textiles, so all design by hand drawn first and then used new technology laser engraving. Also I used gold gilding technique like some of those textiles use gold thread and gold paint. As a main material, I used native Oak. The hand design represents writing and all craftsmanship on this trophy.
